Stars Excellent..
I'm a huge enthusiast of World War II history. It's a very interesting time period especially in terms of strategy and tactics. This is written from the German perspective. Most of the literature i read from the 1938-1945 time period is based upon the German perspective. It's very interesting to see just what was in their minds that changed the world so much. Not the Nazi fanatics persay, but the German military and their mindset about the war and the strategy/tactics they employed.

Major General Von Mellenthin was in a superb position to write one of THE best books about this time period. He served in practically ever major theater of the war. Additionally, he served primarily in HQ units where he was able to see the big picture and close enough to the big thinkers of the German War Machine to write with authority on the subject.

Most of the book is very nuts and bolts about the formations and tactics employed. It is done so that even someone who knows practically nothing can follow along. Maps are given and he breaks it down as simply as he can to give the reader a very good understanding of how the campaigns he was involved in unfolded.

Additionally, he provides commentary on his viewpoint of the Wehrmacht and it's allies as well as the opposing forces. Sometimes critical and sometimes with praise. He's definately anti-Hitler but very pro-German and you almost feel a sadness for the plight of the Wehrmacht. A great military machine doomed to lose and serve a madman.

Stars Case studies in armored warfare
I actually read this book BEFORE the first Gulf War, and when, during operation Desert Shield, a camera crew showed this book sitting on General Schwartzkopf's nightstand I knew immediately what Africa Korps operation Schwartzkopf was going to try to repeat in the coming Desert Storm, -- namely, the battle of the Gazala line, only instead of a dust storm to cover the shift of his tanks to the outer flank in the desert, he would use the airforce to blind his opponents. And sure enough...

Stars From a Military Enthusiast
Though not as great a work as Mansteins memoirs "Lost Victories" Mellenthin's account of his experiences in WWII may be one of the greatests combinations of military theory and history ever produced. At the age of 20 I have already read this book three times and hope to read it again soon. I would recomend it to anyone who is intrested, especialy those new to the field of military theory and tactics. This is truly a great work.
