Stars This book moves like a drunk bullet!
When I think of Hunter S. Thompson I don't think of fiction. I don't think of made up people, but rather real people experiancing real things. When I first got this book, I thought it was all non-fiction. I thought it was a sort of 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' story, but with booze instead of drugs.
Obviously I learned it was a fictional story soon enough. To be honest, that kind of dampened my spirits toward the book. Crazy, instanity-laden stories always seem much more interesting as non-ficiton. However, I pressed on in the book, largely due to the fact that I heard it's going to be made into a movie with Johnny Depp.
The more I read, the more I liked, until I found myself completly enthralled with this crazy story. I couldn't put the book down! This book has everything! Boozing, love, abuse, suspense, drama, wild, wild parties and that distinctive humour anyone at all framiliar with Hunter's writing style will recognize immediatly. I don't know how much of this story is based on fact, but fact or fiction, this is HIGHLY recommended for anyone looking for a fast, fun, super-cool read.

Stars Gonzo Less Gonzo
Rum Diary is an early work of Thompson's that finally made it to the shelves many years after he initially typed it. I found this to be welcome change from the Hunter most of us love. While his "Gonzo" rants from works like Fear and Loathing and the newer Kingdom of Fear, among many others, are what we know and adore him for, Rum Diary falls closer to the classic novel. HST's signature madness still flows freely, but here he breaks from his own cliches. This is, in effect, probably because the book was written before he created his now infamous voice. It's fun, it's a quick and entertaining read, and gives us a window into another side of the man of drugs, politics, guns, gasoline-fueled machines, and opinions. This is another American story, in another land, and it's a good one. Read it for pleasure. Read it to complete your understanding of a writer who will be sorely missed. Find a synopsis elsewhere.
