Not As Good As Other Reviewers Have Said... |
There are 'workbooks' and there are Workbooks! and I purchased this after reading the reviews below and I have to tell you that it is not nearly as good as I was led to believe.
First, this book can really ONLY used as a supplement to another text. There is no progression in how material is presented nor much in the way of explanation -- a paragraph here and there in the back. So if you were going to use this alone, you would have to come up with explanations yourself.
For example: on page 11, there is the 'sudden' introduction of calculators. On page 159 the authors say (in total): "If children have difficulty with the exercises on the page, suggest to them that they use their fingers or counters to find the answers". THAT's IT. Good luck.
Another example: on page 14, there is the introduction of tens and ones. They have six problems showing a tens-stack (or multiple thereof) plus some one's. Now this was precisely the sort of thing that I wanted assistance in teaching and showing my daughter.
About this the authors say: Make sure that children understand that the `1' in `14' stands for 1 ten, but the 1 in 41 represents 1 one. (Arggh.)
Now I have been using the "Giant Basic Workbooks" up to this point and perhaps I'm spoiled, because I came to expect that material would be introduced and built upon, not just slapped down in front of us. These are first graders, after all.
Three Stars. A Terrible workbook if you are looking for explanations or the slow introduction and building upon of math concepts. (Definitely not good for homeschooling.)
Probably a good book if you desire additional problem sets to work on with your school child. Colorful though crowded pages. |

Math Made Easy 1st Grade Edition |
I just recieved this book but am excited to start using it. The problems seem both fun and logical, well seated in 1st grade skill levels yet challenging too as it offeres new information, and new ways to use old skills. My son is excited about the stickers, too.
Another person mentioned there is a little too much drawing or writing involved for a 1st grader, and I do agree with that, only because most 1st graders are a little slow in these departments, but this is nothing you cannot work around and continue the book around - just improvise a little bit. Instead of drawing six dogs I let him draw six circles, for example. On pages with a lot of writing, I will incoporate that lesson in to his phonics work for the day, killing two birds with one stone.
The book is well built, also, I think it will hold up well under daily 6 year old boy wear.
Great book for home schoolers, or parents whose children need a little boost in their math skills from home. |

fundamental math practice book |
A top quality workbook from DK. It organizes 1st grade math in progressive topics and gives drills on each of them. Very comprehensive. Star stickers reward good work. Most sheets practice adding and subtracting facts. They are solid but a bit repeating and monotonous.
After my son grasped the basics with this book, I additionally seek some tricky and thought-provoking math to elevate his skills. We use Beestar.org as a supplement. It provides free daily math exercises with real life problems. My son often shows up in the honor roll - thanks to the solid fundamentals built with this book. |
