Ideas Behind the Chess Openings : Algebraic Edition (Chess)

Average rating: Stars
Stars Kasparov should make a new opening idea book.
I dont like this book. theres probably more people that hate this book than like it. it just doesnt seem complete at all. and some of the explanations for the openings seem overly simplified. i read in LOGICAL CHESS MOVE BY MOVE the ideas behind the colle system. And the ideas behing the colle system were explained clearly and in depth. I looked up the colle system in ideas behind the chess openings and didnt see any real explanation of the opening as was done in chernevs logical chess. there was like no explanation at all of the colle system and i believe that most of the book doesnt explain the openings in depth at all. This book is also very dry and difficult to read through. I think Kasparov could do a better job of explaining the openings than fine did. And i think he should write a new opening ideas manual and make it for gambit or something. that would be cool. But still if you're a beginning player you should instead be studying endgames and tactics first before openings.
Ideas Behind the Chess Openings : Algebraic Edition (Chess) - Reuben Fine
Stars old but still of interest
This book is useful primarily because of Fine's emphasis on verbally explaining the ideas that generate specific move sequences, thus helping a player who understands the basic goals of an opening to come up with moves that fit logically "into its overall scheme." For example, in the Slav defence (1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 Nc3 dxc4), Fine writes that Black "gives up the center" in order to "get his bishop out." He explains how Black's development has much to do with the developing the bishop, restraining White's center, etc. However, the book's secondary value, as a survey of the openings as they are currently played, is less useful, even for beginners (presumably experienced players use more advanced texts anyway). Again, using the Slav as an example, Fine does not mention that Black's current variaton 4...a6 in which Black does not surrender the center. Random examples: He dismisses the Scotch game as vapid and holding little advantage for White - although we now have seen Kasparov himself use it in his tournament matches. The Benko gambit is mentioned only in one paragraph as being good for White. The Closed Sicilian ( 1 e4 c5 2 Nc3) is described as being too "passive" to be of any use for White. So, the paradox is that this is a book that presumably teaches us how to evaluate an opening move and yet disagrees with much of current theory. P.S. Don't even think about the Pirc - 'cause Fine sure doesn't.

Stars Good if used with other books
I must honestly say as an expert on chess that if you are a beginner don't get this. But if you are just beyond the basic moves and want to really learn look at the "Chess For Juniors" series where actually the most basic book in th series may help you if you are really just beyond the moves (Chess For Juniors - the entire series is for adults or kids) or if you really want to learn the ideas behind the openings without a terribly outdated book then get in order: Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors and then More Unbeatable Chess lesson for Juniors. You will see what I mean when you read the quality of an author than know how to teach!
